The Italian term “codice fiscale” is commonly translated as “tax code”, “fiscal code” or “tax number”. It is an Italian identification code (Italian tax code). When referring to individuals, as opposed to entities, the codice fiscale is the result of a formula applied to a person’s name, date and place of birth.
The tax identification number provides a means of identification of foreign citizens in their relations with public authorities and other administrations. For individuals, it is determined on the basis of personal data and is the result of a formula applied to a person’s name, date and place of birth and is made up of an expression of 16 alphanumeric characters.
Italian tax code (codice fiscale) purposes:
It is mandatory to have an Italian tax code for a number of Italian activities such as to:
– rent an apartment for more than 30 days;
– study and/or work in Italy,
– get Italian permission to stay (permesso di soggiorno)
(if you need to stay more than 90 days for non EU citizens),
– open an italian bank account,
– apply for a utility connection,
– register a preliminary contract for a property purchase,
– buy or inherit an italian property,
– start an Italian court dispute,
– get an italian montage,
Italian tax implications:
NB! Having an Italian tax code does not imply any tax duty per se.
You are subject to Italian tax duties if you:
– own certain qualifying assets in Italy,
– are an Italian resident,
– earn an Italian taxable income.
Check existing Italian tax code (codice fiscale):
If you believe that you were already assigned a tax code, you can check it personally online through two simple steps, as follows:
a) “calculate” your Italian codice fiscale on any of the many online websites that offer an online tax code calculator or generator: “calcolo codice fiscale“;
To use your Codice Fiscale officially, you need to have the valid one from Agenzia Entrate, even if the code is the same and you can generate yourself.
b) once you have what you believe to be your Italian tax code, check if it is valid and current at this webpage set up for this purpose by the Italian Revenue Office (Agenzia delle Entrate).
