How do you get Permesso di Soggiorno in Italy?

The Permesso di Soggiorno is your foreigner registration card and literally translates to “Permit to Stay”. You have to follow a lengthy process to apply for the card and usually it takes 3 to 6 months to get. No matter what visa (student, working, or otherwise) you have, you MUST apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno.

How long does it take to get residence permit in Italy?

Within 20 days of receiving the permit to stay in Italy, Americans must go to the local Vital Statistics Bureau, Anagrafe of the Comune, to apply for residency. It generally takes one to two months to receive the certificate of residence (Certificato di Residenza).

How long does it take to get Permesso di Soggiorno?

The questura appointment date and time is non-negotiable (it’s automatically assigned) and will generally occur one to two months from the date of application.

How do I claim residency in Italy?

Can I go outside of Italy with receipt of Permesso Soggiorno?

You are allowed to travel outside Italy only if you hold a valid permesso di soggiorno and valid travel document. As a general rule, you cannot travel inside or outside the EU with the receipt of your permesso only.

How long can I stay in Italy after my Permesso expires?

After your visa is expired you can stay legally in Italy further 60 days during which you can require the renovation of it. At the end of those 60 days if you have not submitted such request your stay in Italy is nomore legal.

How do I renew my permit to stay in Italy?

Renewal of Permit of Stay. The permit of stay must be renewed at least 60 days before the permit expires. Marca da Bollo (Italian Stamp: can be purchased at any tabacchi shop) of € 16,00. The Marca da Bollo will need to be placed on the completed permit of stay application.
